M. S. Narikbayev Library’s Rare Books Collection is the most unique collection in the library. It contains titles that deserve the name “book monuments”. Books become rare for a variety of reasons. One of these is the year of publication. The older the book, the fewer copies have survived until today, and the more valuable they are. The value of the book is determined by many factors. First of all, these are the characteristics that define the book as a source of information: scientific and cultural significance.

One of the main goals of the Library is to provide access to this collection to library users, but at the same time preserve it for future generations.

The Rare Books Collection currently contains about 630 copies. These are mostly Russian and foreign books published from the beginning of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century.

The main goals of the electronic collection of rare books are

  • To ensure the availability of valuable materials;
  • To improve the quality and speed of service;
  • To modernise library technologies;
  • To integrate library information resources into the global information space;
  • To ensure long-term storage of electronic documents.

When selecting rare editions, the library uses such criteria as the uniqueness of the material, the physical state of the book, and the relevance of the document for educational and research purposes.

The task of the library is to convert electronic copies into electronic documents and to save them for the future. Documents on electronic media are rapidly expanding the library collections, setting a new task for the Library – to ensure long-term storage. Electronic documents are extremely fragile and can be easily lost, erased, damaged or altered.
